Cllr Richard Holmes has expressed his delight at the roll out of townland names on road signs.
“My late father was passionate about the townland names and the issue arose during the committee meetings of the 1718 Emigration Group. There was also cross party support for my motion in Council to add the townland names.
“In a world of alpha numerical post codes it is great to see the return of the townland names. They form a link to our ancestors and the names also link to the land itself.
“My own townland of Moyletra Toy means lower hill of the laity, distinct from the neighbouring townland of Moyletra Kill which means lower hill of the church where Moyletra church is built.
“With the recent uptake in interest in genealogy, townlands have become even more important. Our ancestors leaving these shores all left from their townlands and the changes to road signs will undoubtedly be of value to tourists seeking their roots.
“I’m grateful to council colleagues for their support and to officers for starting the roll out so promptly. This will ensure that townland names are kept alive for the generations to come.”
