Cllr Richard Holmes has reacted with delight to the news that Fearne Cotton is descended from William Gilmour, born in Garvagh in 1821.
“Fearne Cotton is a household name and to see her visit Garvagh museum and trace her ancestor through the pages of the Coleraine Chronicle was fascinating. William Gilmour certainly led an interesting life and his determination and adventurous spirit have been reflected in his TV presenter descendant.
“Let’s hope this isn’t Fearne’s last visit to vibrant little town of Garvagh. She’ll be guaranteed to receive a warm welcome.
“This only goes to offer a glimpse into the genealogy of people from other parts of the UK and of Ulster’s connections with many people, which spread far beyond the British Isles.
“Fortunately for Fearne Cotton she came from good stock here in County Londonderry!”
