Coleraine Chronicle receives Google coronavirus emergency funds

Community Information

The Coleraine Chronicle is among a number of titles in the Alpha Media Group to receive emergency funding from Google aimed at helping news publishers through the coronavirus crisis.

The funding to support local newsrooms is part of the Google News Initiative.

Google received more than 12,000 applications from 140 countries, the vast majority of which were from newsrooms with fewer than 26 journalists. Half of the applications did not meet Google’s criteria.

Multiple funding applications from different publications within the same publishing group were permitted.

Funding ranged from $5,000-$30,000 (£4,000-£24,000) for each recipient, capped at $85,000 (£69,000) for a publisher with multiple publications receiving support.

A Google spokeswoman said: “In the last few months, we have provided $39.5 million in funding to more than 5600 publishers in 115 countries.

“The money is being applied in diverse and creative ways, from ensuring basic reporting needs and giving emergency stipends to allow reporters to cover the crisis, to driving audience engagement and generating subscriptions.”
