Coleraine Councillor Trevor Clarke has welcomed news that the deal to deliver Northern Ireland’s first and only enterprise zone to a site on the towns’ Portstewart Road has now taken a significant step forward.
Councillor Clarke said:
“This announcement that Council has today achieved legal & financial close in respect of the enterprise zone deal is hugely significant news for Coleraine.
The scheme is worth well in excess of £20m and will create employment at both construction and operational stages. More importantly, it means the North Coast can at last take advantage of Kelvin, the ultra-secure high-speed trans-Atlantic data cable linking Coleraine and Northern Ireland to New York and mainland Europe. This places the Borough well to take our economy into new and exciting territory.
I have been concerned at the delays in getting this over the line and raised the issue again just last month at councils’ Leisure & Development committee. In response, council officers gave assurances that completion of the final technicalities of the contracts were imminent.
I am delighted the outstanding pre-completion conditions have now been fulfilled. I hope and expect the deal with 5-Nines is the first of many and a digital economy develops in Coleraine.“
