Coleraine man’s foul-mouthed response to police who wished to breathalyse him

A COLERAINE man with an “atrocious” record for drink drive-related issues who lay down across the front seats of a parked car in an attempt to avoid police seeing him was spotted and after being told he was being breathalysed he replied: “F**k your breath box”.

A few weeks earlier, Stephen James Adams, unemployed, of Shell Hill Crescent, had cut the Sky TV cable at his ex-partner’s address.

Adams has been jailed for four months and banned from the road for four years after pleading guilty to a catalogue of offences.

Coleraine Magistrates Court, on Monday, heard how police had attended a property in Portstewart on March 9 this year following reports of criminal damage at Adams’ ex-partner’s home.

After hearing a noise his victim looked out and saw 41-year-old Adams. After he drove off she discovered a television cable had been cut where he had been standing.

Adams was arrested for causing criminal damage, breaching a non-molestation order and failing to provide a breath specimen. Police located a Stanley blade.

On March 21 this year police spotted a parked car and found Adams “trying to hide” by lying across the vehicle’s front seats.

The keys were in the ignition and a can of beer was discovered in the centre console.

When police removed him from the vehicle Adams was abusive and refused to provide a roadside breath sample, telling officers “F**k your breath box.”
He admitted drink related charges and breaching a non-molestation order.

In Adams’ defence, the court was told that he had been in custody since June 19 and had found it “extremely hard” to deal with the breakdown of a long term relationship but now realises his behaviour was inappropriate.

Unemployed Adams now wanted to “draw a line under these matters and move on with the rest of his life.”

District Judge Liam McNally, who described Adams’ record as “atrocious,” also imposed a £100 fine.
