The Atlantic Link Enterprise Campus was launched today at the University campus on Coleraine site. Located in our enterprise zone, the first in Northern Ireland, this is the start of what is hoped to be an exciting commercial venture for the area.
With the benefits which enterprise zones offer, incentives such as tax concessions, tax breaks and Government support the zone affords a great opportunity for both new and expanding firms. A recent innovation which started in 2012 Coleraine is extremely fortunate to have an enterprise zone and today is a culmination of years of hard work to realise this.
The first anchor tenant has already been secured 5Nines and they plan to open in June 2018. Who are 5Nines? Well it certainly all adds up to more than 45. 5Nines is the worlds leading independent global data centre provider and developer.
This is just the beginning and it is now about what else this can lead to. The location of the enterprise zone is less than a mile from the landing point of the transatlantic fibre optic cable and with its installation Coleraine has direct communications to major North American cities and has become an optimal Atlantic telecommunications hub for North America and European high capacity telecommunications. Coleraine is connected to the heart of Manhattan and back again in just over 66 thousands of a second.
All this makes Coleraine an attractive hub and has launched Coleraine onto a global setting with the worlds communication system. Data centres such as 5Nines do not employ a massive amount of people but they are a magnet to attract others from the digital economy. This will be of interest to those involved in science research, ew tech companies and should assist and help us to retain our students in this field.
Congratulations to our officers and the University and all those who have collaborated to bring this to fruition, but the hard work intensifies now, as I said earlier before we have just begun.
We have the magnet, let’s see what we can attract with it.
