A Commemoration Parade will take place next Sunday ( 15th September ) from Coleraine British Legion at 2pm to the War Memorial for the unveiling and dedication of the new UDR memorial at 2.30pm.
Fundraising for the memorial began in the middle of January. The memorial will be placed at the front of the town hall.
The plaque will form the shape of a Causeway Stone and will be inscribed with the UDR badge and the Conspicuous Gallantry Cross awarded by the Queen in 2006.
UDR Branch Adrian Nicholl said “Coleraine is one of the few major towns in Northern Ireland with no commemoration to the role played by the Ulster Defence Regiment or the sacrifice made by the members of the regiment and their families”
Local MLA Maurice Bradley said “It will be a fitting tribute to the bravery of those who put their lives on the line to ensure people like me slept safe at night. I look forward to the unveiling next week. I am grateful for the hardworking foresight to bringing this tribute to fruition”
The Ulster Defence Regiment was an infantry regiment of the British Army established in 1970, with a comparatively short existence ending in 1992.
