Confiscation Order against Articlave man

1 Mins read

The Department for Communities Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order to the value of £10,274 against Jonathan Walker (40) of Dunboe Crescent, Articlave at Antrim Crown Court yesterday.

Mr Walker claimed Jobseeker’s Allowance on the basis that he was unemployed and Income Support on the grounds he was a lone parent who was unavailable for work. The defendant stated in his benefit application forms that he held capital below the statutory thresholds.

During his claim to benefits the defendant failed to declare that he owned a second property which held equity of approximately £85,000. As a result of this he received a total of £10,510 in benefits he was not entitled to over a five year period.

On 4 March 2016, the defendant appeared at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to five charges of dishonesty.

At yesterday’s confiscation hearing the court granted a Confiscation Order in the amount of £10,274 with a 12 month prison sentence in default of non-payment. He has until 4 January 2017 to satisfy the order.
