The Department for Communities’ Financial Investigation Unit obtained a Confiscation Order to the value of £12,983.85 against a Ballymoney man at Antrim Crown Court today.

Gary Cunningham (43) claimed Income Support on the basis that he was a carer and was unavailable for work.

During his claim to benefits the defendant failed to declare that he held capital in excess of the statutory limits. As a result of this he received a total of £16,168.65 in benefits that he was not entitled to over a five year period.

On 2 June 2017, the defendant pleaded guilty to two charges of dishonesty at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court. At the confiscation hearing today the Court granted a Confiscation Order in the amount of £12,983.85. The defendant must satisfy the order by 10 January 2018 or serve a six month prison sentence for non-payment of the order, which will remain payable.
