Council meetings should be as transparent as possible

SDLP Portstewart Councillor, Angela Mulholland has written to the Chief Executive seeking urgent clarity after learning only 20 people can watch the live stream of the upcoming Council AGM.

Councillor Mulholland commented:

“I was concerned to learn that in order for the public to watch the live stream of our virtual Council AGM, they must register their details online and a maximum of 20 viewers is permitted. This is not good enough. As councillors, we are public servants and ratepayers who elect us have a right to know what we are discussing on their behalf.”

“Given the financial and governance difficulties, Causeway Coast and Glens Council has had in recent months, it is especially worrying that these meetings are not accessible. We must be striving for as much transparency and accountability as is possible and COVID-19 moving meetings online should not limit this.”

“I have written to the Chief Executive this morning, seeking urgent clarity on who decided on this arbitrary figure of 20 maximum viewers and will be seeking to change it. I have asked for the item to be placed on the agenda at our next meeting so it can be rectified in future.”
