Council must live up to promises on residents’ parking – McCaw

Alliance Portrush Councillor Chris McCaw has expressed disappointment that a proposal to introduce a residents’ parking scheme for Causeway Street in Portrush has been rejected by Causeway Coast and Glens Council.

Speaking after the vote, Councillor McCaw said, “We have brought this motion this evening so that council can live up to a clear promise made to residents in this area of Portrush when the parking charges were introduced in July. People who are permanent residents, who have no access to off street parking, are now being made to pay to park at their own homes. It was made clear to councillors that a residents’ parking scheme would be introduced, not just for one block of houses, but for all residents using East Strand.”

The proposal, which was brought to council by Chris McCaw and Norman Hillis, was met with concern from councillors from other areas that this would lead to similar demands in other areas. In response to this, Councillor McCaw said ,”If that happened then I don’t see that necessarily as a bad thing. People shouldn’t have to pay to park at their own homes. The fact remains, this was a promise made to ratepayers that wasn’t lived up to.”
