Council needs to respect, nurture and promote Irish Language – McShane

1 Mins read

Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane has said that Causeway Coast and Glens Council should nurture and promote the Irish language.

Cllr. McShane said:

“The Irish language has a great resonance among many citizens of this Borough and I think it’s important that council respects that. Weather it is the Irish medium schools, both Primary and Secondary, the Irish language cultural and historical groups as well as the importance the Irish language has on our place names and geography the council should recognise the potential any support can bring and be prepared to have a strategy with appropriate resources to enhance this potential.

“I think that given that the old Limavady  Council had an Irish language officer and that this is now part of the new council set up there should be a continuation of that previous policy expanded across the new Borough.

“Council is due to decide on this issue and I hope that it can be discussed with an openness and generosity. If implemented properly an Irish language strategy could economically as well as culturally benefit not only individuals and groups but the entire Council  area.
