A notice of motion submitted and proposed by Councillor Clarke, seconded by Councillor Duddy will be put forward to full council this evening that the council asserts ownership of the historic water fountain on Lower Captain Street, Coleraine, and puts in place a process to restore it.
The Victorian Era Water Fountain in the Captain Street area of Coleraine was made listed earlier this year. The fountain is of historical interest as it predates mains water installation; it is thought that a bore hole drew spring water from 80ft below. Significant also from a social perspective as a supply of fresh water to local residents, many of whom would not have this facility within their own homes; as such it became an informal gathering point.
Speaking about the preservation of the fountain, Councillor Aaron Callan said:
“I would just say that it is vital we protect our heritage which includes our listed buildings but also items like this fountain. Preserving the fountain keeps the connection to our past.”
