‘Councillors Kept in Dark Over Hotel Judicial Review’ – Laverty

Councillor Ambrose Laverty has emailed Causeway Coast and Glens Council to ask for the full Summary of Judgement by Mr Justice McCloskey.

Mr Justice McCloskey was the senior High Court Judge overseeing the Judicial Review into the proposed North West Hotel at The Pits, Portstewart.

Councillor Laverty, who attended the Judicial Review hearings in his role as a member of the planning committee, was perplexed about an email sent from senior management in Causeway Coast and Glens Council on Friday.

The Councillor claims it did not accurately reflect the findings of Justice McCloskey and it appeared, designed to keep elected members in the dark.

“It appears much of what Justice McCloskey found against Council was removed the oversight of Councillors. In particular, his condemnation of the Freedom of Information processes and serious concerns about land valuations. It appears clear those who authored the informative to Councillors via email done so with the intention of misleading members by exclusion of information.

“I remain concerned and frustrated by the inability to gain access to the information I require to do my work satisfactorily”.

Justice McCloskey ruled against the Council last week and in favour of objectors to a Hotel and Leisure Complex on the North Coast.
