Court hears chef was more than three and a half times drink drive limit

A JUDGE said an alcohol in breath reading of 129 – more than three and a half times the legal limit – was “one of the highest readings I am likely to deal with for quite some time”.

District Judge Peter King was speaking at Coleraine Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena on Monday, where Weng Choy Choong (43), a chef from Killead Road, Antrim, was given a three year driving ban and fined £350 for driving with excess alcohol at Frosses Road, Ballymoney, on October 22 this year.

A defence lawyer said the defendant works in a restaurant in the Coleraine area.

The lawyer said the defendant had been off work the previous day and had been drinking and this was a case where he got into the car the next day and was “quite over the limit”.

Judge King added: “He should have absolutely been nowhere near the wheel of a vehicle.”
