Court hears drunk man was standing in middle of Bushmills Road in Coleraine and stopping traffic

1 Mins read

A DRUNK man was standing in the middle of Coleraine’s Bushmills Road stopping traffic, the town’s Magistrates Court has been told.

Sean Neil Philip Owens (35), with an address given as Linenhall Street in Ballymena, admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour.

The case was dealt with in the absence of the defendant at Coleraine Court, sitting in Ballymena on October 12.

A prosecutor said around “tea time” on September 15 this year police were tasked to a report of a man causing a disturbance at Bushmills Road.

The lawyer said when police arrived they saw Owens with a bottle of alcohol “standing in the middle of the road” and he was “stopping cars from entering Bushmills Road”.

Officers spoke to the “highly intoxicated” Owens and removed him from the road.

Police then spoke to staff at a nearby off-licence who said Owens had been verbally abusive and had caused a disturbance when they refused to serve him.

The defendant initially refused to identify himself to police and when arrested he continued to be disorderly on the way to Coleraine PSNI Station.

Defence solicitor John Murphy said the defendant was drunk and couldn’t remember much of what happened but wished to apologise.
The defendant was fined £200.
