Court hears motorist sped through police checkpoint near Cloughmills in early hours

1 Mins read

A MOTORIST sped through a police checkpoint near Cloughmills in the early hours of the morning in the run up to Christmas, Coleraine Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Philip Elder (22), a former paint sprayer of Ballynaloob Road near Dunloy, committed offences on December 14/15 last year.

He pleaded guilty to failing to stop for police; using a BMW without insurance and possession of cocaine.

The driving offences relate to Drumadoon Road in Cloughmills.

A prosecutor said police were conducting duties at Drumadoon Road in the early hours when a vehicle approached at speed.

A police officer with a red torch signalled for the driver to stop but the vehicle failed to do.

Police attempted to follow but lost the vehicle in Cloughmills.

They continued to patrol the area to see if they could find the vehicle and later they discovered it in the Mounthill area of Cloughmills and the tyres were still warm.

The defendant answered the door and admitted being the driver and being uninsured.

When arrested a search found two small bags containing cocaine.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the defendant had been at the wheel of a friend’s vehicle and the friend had been in the passenger seat.

After the friend had consumed alcohol the defendant decided to drive the vehicle “a short distance” and he wished to apologise to the court.

A previous court heard it was the defendant’s third no insurance matter.

He was given eight penalty points and fines totalling £650.
