A customer who committed offences at a shop in Portstewart then returned to the premises in a drunken attempt to say sorry but ended up stealing again.

Gary Lewis (34), of Hazelbank Road, Coleraine, pleaded guilty to a number of offences including theft, disorderly behaviour, assault on police and possessing a lock knife in a public place and was given a six months jail term.

He appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday via video link from prison where he had been on remand. A prosecutor said that whilst at the shop the defendant was aggressive and began swinging punches towards the face of a staff member.

The defendant returned on a later date and was verbally abusive to staff and when arrested later at his home he punched a police officer and hit another officer on the leg.
An exclusion order prevented Lewis entering the shop but he returned again on a date in May and despite being asked to leave he entered the store on two further occasions and then stole magazines, food and an ice lolly.

Defence barrister Francis Rafferty said Lewis had returned to the store in a “misguided and drunken attempt” to say sorry but when things did not go as planned he made off with more items.
