Twelve months on and it seems the Alliance Party are still trying to put obstacles in the way of the UK’s democratic decision to leave the EU.
“The decision has been taken” said Richard Holmes, UUP Candidate for East Londonderry. “Now it is all about the deal. We need a deal that allows industry to function, for materials and goods to flow across borders hassle free. It is not in anyone’s interest either on the island of Ireland or across Europe to thwart a sensible free trade deal.
“The current bluster and megaphone diplomacy needs to give way to common sense and hard work by negotiators.
“The Alliance Party soothsayers seem to be predicting all sorts of catastrophic events that will befall us. But the future is not written yet. If both the UK and the EU apply common sense we can have a deal that works for everyone.
“However, the call for a referendum on the final deal will ensure that the EU gives us the worst possible deal. I’ve yet to hear of a divorcing couple stay together because they couldn’t agree how to divide the assets! Perhaps this is merely a ploy to frustrate the will of the people.”
