Disqualified driver told police: ‘You’ve got me’

1 Mins read

Lee Francis James Sheppard (28), of Islandmore Crescent in the Portrush area, made the comment whilst using a Saab vehicle at the Lodge Road Roundabout in Coleraine on July 14 this year.

The defendant was also uninsured and the car was untaxed.

Coleraine Magistrates Court heard the defendant, a groundsman, had previously been given a suspended sentence for driving while disqualified.

A defence lawyer admitted the defendant had an “appalling” driving record.

District Judge Peter King said Sheppard had 98 previous convictions and it was his fifth conviction for driving whilst disqualified.

The judge said the only way to protect road users in the area was to jail Sheppard who was given a six months prison term and a three year driving ban along with a fine.
He was released on £750 bail pending appeal.
