Drink driver came to police attention ‘twenty metres’ from home

1 Mins read

A motorist was stopped by police “twenty metres” from his home and was found to be over the drink driving limit.

Daniel Joseph Carey (65), was in a BMW 3 series vehicle on May 19 this year.

The defendant, of Ballyveely Road, Cloughmills, told police he had had beer a short time earlier.

He had an alcohol in breath reading of 53 with the legal limit being 35.

Defence solicitor Denise Gillan said it was a routine police stop and there had been no complaints about the manner of the driving.

“He had only another twenty metres to get home,” she said.

The lawyer said the defendant, a retired factory worker who had been driving for more than 40 years, had been in a public house in Cloughmills and had consumed two pints.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday, District Judge Peter King noted the defendant had no previous convictions.

The judge said the minimum disqualification period was twelve months but he said the defendant was suitable for a drink drive rehabilitation course which if completed in time would reduce the ban to nine months.

The defendant was also fined £200.
