Drink Driver Rushed Friend With ‘Broken Ankle’ To Hospital And Then Drove To Mcdonald’s Where Off-duty Police Officer Took Keys From Ignition

1 Mins read

A man who was caught over the drink drive limit after going to a McDonald’s had wanted something to eat after taking a friend who suffered a ‘broken ankle’ to hospital, a court has heard. Nathan Lamont (25), of Windsor Avenue, Coleraine, had just gone through a drive-thru at the McDonald’s restaurant in the town at 12.20am on April 30 this year and when he pulled into a parking bay an off-duty police officer took the keys out of the ignition.

The defendant had a reading of 57 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35mcgs.

Defence barrister Thomas McKeever said Lamont’s friend had broken an ankle and when an ambulance was called but was taking some time to respond the defendant made the decision to drive to the Emergency Department.
Whilst the friend waited to be seen Lamont made an “even more stupid decision” to drive to McDonald’s to get food.

At Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday June 4 Lamont – who had a previous similar offence – was banned from driving for three years and fined £400.
