‘DUP attempting to block Pride solidarity’ – McShane

1 Mins read

The DUP is attempting to block a show of solidarity with the LGBTQI+ community by ‘calling in’ a decision by Causeway Coast and Glens to fly the Pride flag, Sinn Féin Councillor Cara McShane has said.

Cllr McShane commented:

“The DUP’s decision to deploy the ‘call-in’ mechanism is devoid of merit and is merely a time-wasting exercise aimed at blocking the flag from flying on our civic building.

“By calling in the motion, the DUP are attempting to deny LGBTQI+ citizens in the Causeway Coast and Glens area a gesture of support and solidarity.

“It is also completely regressive given the positive steps we have seen taken in other council areas like Belfast, Antrim and Newtownabbey and Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon.

“This Saturday we will also see the first ever Pride event in the Mid and East Antrim area, taking place in Larne.

“This offensive stunt owes everything to the DUP’s continued denial of rights to our LGBTQI+ community and is symptomatic of its denial of marriage equality and rights for women, Irish speakers and victims of the conflict – rights which are enjoyed by citizens in council areas everywhere else across these islands.”
