Ulster Unionist candidate for East Londonderry, Richard Holmes, has warned the voters of East Londonderry not to take heed of the DUPs focus on ‘Fear before Facts’.
He said that the DUP were promoting a negative and narrow campaign, rather than focusing on the issues of importance to the people of East Londonderry. Amid heavy job losses, cuts to health and education service provision, the decline in industry and a threat to the high street, the DUP would be better explaining what they have done since 2001 and what they are going to do to improve these matters going forward. What people want is hope and positivity, not scare tactics focused on Sinn Fein and Michelle O’Neill being ‘top dog’.
Councillor Richard Holmes said:
“Northern Ireland’s position within the United Kingdom is secure. Sinn Fein have no chance of taking the Westminster seat in East Londonderry.
“Over the course of the last five elections the average Unionist vote has stood at over 21,000 votes. The average vote for Sinn Fein is 7,800. There is therefore no chance of a Sinn Fein MP being elected in East Londonderry.
“This is merely a simple, lazy, canvassing tool being used by the DUP, something they have always been good at – putting ‘Fear before Facts’. It is also a diversionary tactic away from their failure to ‘put things right’, as they promised in their 2001 Manifesto for the General and Local Government election.
“As the Ulster Unionist candidate I am offering a positive vision for East Londonderry – one that focuses on jobs, investment, education, health and a fair deal for our farmers. These are issues the DUP would prefer to avoid, because despite being in a position of power for over ten years their record on such issues is inexcusable. Instead they hold a record for scandal, being: RHI, NAMA, and land deals, none of which have benefited the people of East Londonderry.
“I am therefore appealing to the people of East Londonderry to vote for a positive, experienced, and enthusiastic advocate. As your MP I will put East Londonderry first – focusing on the issues that affect people’s daily lives.
“Do not be duped into the mantra of the DUP. Put the interests of East Londonderry first, rather than those interests of the DUP. Vote for change, Vote for Holmes.”
