EAST Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has cautiously welcomed the easing of lockdown restrictions in Northern Ireland.

The Northern Ireland Executive announced on Thursday that, from Monday, certain larger retailers could open, small weddings and civil ceremonies could take place and those who have been forced to shield due to underlying health conditions could go outside.

“It is great news for those who have been isolated and lonely during lockdown, but please remember to stay safe if you are vulnerable.

“It is also positive that we are seeing businesses able to reopen, and of course those who have been planning their special day will now be able to tie the knot – albeit on a reduced scale.”

All those who had made the sacrifices demanded by lockdown restrictions should be commended, Ms Sugden said.

“Hopefully this is the start of a return to normality. It’s still early days, but I’m convinced we can overcome the challenges of COVID-19 by sticking to the other, continuing, rules and working together.”
