A special Drone Expo Day created a real buzz in Carrickfergus on Saturday.

Families flew drones, took to the cockpit of a helicopter simulator and raced remote-controlled cars at the action-packed event.

Among those taking in the latest eye-in-the-sky technology was Mayor of Mid and East Antrim Borough, Councillor Audrey Wales MBE.

She said: “The Drone Expo Day was a new event and I was delighted to see a great turnout of people of all ages.

“The day marked the end of the latest phase of the Carrickfergus Revitalise scheme and was organised by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council in partnership with the Carrickfergus Revitalise Steering Group (a subgroup of the Carrickfergus Regeneration Partnership) and Department for Communities.

“Everybody was offered the chance to get involved with the drones and cars during the Expo Day and it was a hugely successful day of entertainment.”

A fleet of drones touched down at Carrickfergus Civic Centre, where an indoor flying zone was set up for a time trial challenge.

Competitors set off in groups of three or four, bidding to guide their craft through the course in the fastest time.

Members of the public were also invited to get behind the controls of a helicopter simulator.

All aspects of flying a helicopter were covered, with visitors given the choice of four models to experience.

Mid Ulster Models, specialists in radio-controlled craft, displayed a selection of fixed-wing model aircraft and advised on how people can get involved in the hobby.

Outside, a purpose-built racetrack hosted smaller carts for younger children and nitro-fuelled remote-controlled racing cars for the adults.

Visitors were invited to bring along their own model cars and race against others for a prize for the fastest lap of the day.

A treasure hunt, face painting, giveaways and retailers’ discounts were also offered. Prizes were donated by local businesses Medicare, Flipping Crepes, Courtyard Coffee House, World of Wonder, Carrickfergus Omniplex and Cuddys.

The day’s action was covered live by the Q Radio team.
