Up to 30 firefighters were dispatched in an early morning blaze which has now been extinguished in the Inishowen Park area of Portstewart.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 6am. It is understood the fire started at an oil tank and spread to the property.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.

A nearby resident said  “I woke just before six to the sound of water being sprayed then an explosion, the pressure wave rattled my windows, must have been an oil tank. This is the second major house fire in 48 hours in relatively close proximity”

Another said “I woke up by some sort of explosion at 5.50am, thought my roof was coming off”

DUP’s Mark Fielding said “Thankfully no one has been injured at this second fire in four days in Portstewart. Having visited the scene the fire services have finished putting out the fire which was confined to the garage of the property”

SDLP’s Councillor Angela Mulholland thanked the fire service for their quick response “Thanks to the quick actions of our firefighters we were fortunate that this did not spread to further property and put lives at risk.”
