Former DUP mayor Ian Stevenson has court appeal dismissed and has been put on Sex Offenders List for five years

1 Mins read

A FORMER DUP Mayor yesterday (Friday) had a court appeal dismissed regarding a sexual assault conviction and was put on the Sex Offenders List for five years and ordered to do 220 hours of unpaid work.

Ian Stevenson (49) from Ballymoney – who was once mayor of the former Ballymoney Borough Council – had the case listed at a court in Belfast yesterday as an appeal against conviction and sentence.

After the hearing the Courts Service confirmed the appeal was dismissed and the original sentence was affirmed.

The defendant had sexually assaulted a woman in April 2017.

The charge was that he ‘intentionally touched’ the female, ‘the circumstances being that the touching was sexual, that she did not consent to the touching and you did not reasonably believe that she so consented’.

After being originally charged the defendant had been suspended by the DUP and following his original conviction last year he was then suspended by Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council where he was a councillor.

He stood for re-election this year as an Independent but failed to hold onto his seat, getting 220 votes.

A court last year heard Stevenson had sexually assaulted a nursing colleague in a care home by squeezing the woman’s breast.
