Glens Independent Councillor Padraig McShane slammed the decision by the Council to sign a covenant with the British Armed Forces.
“Even if we can look progressively towards a brighter future in Ireland despite the British military, we simply can not ignore the fact that these armed organisations are routinely invading, and bombing foreign nation states.
“As it always was, young, socially deprived, largely poorly educated Irish men are being taken from these shores and paid to kill the poor of other nations around the globe.
“A false sense of Patriotism to an Empire that sees them only as ‘expendable commodities’ and a mistaken belief that that they are somehow engaged in the pursuit of freedom for others allows them to remain blind to the fact that wars today are for Halliburton. Global Exxon, Royal Dutch Shell, BP and the military industrial complex.
“If anyone in the Causeway Coast and Glens cared for their service personal they would start by educating them in the complete hollowness of their endeavours”.
The Councillor finished by pointing to the shallow nature of the SDLP’s opposition to violence.
” How can the Mayor welcome this covenant that only lends a sense of legitimacy to violence and those who continually perpetrate it? The SDLP support for British violence is unfathomable.”
What is the covenant is it an anti drink agreement ?
