BT Coleraine

Council has approved plans to erect a statue to mark the Ulster University’s 50th anniversary of its Coleraine campus at the Lodge Road Roundabout. The statue which will be 30ft tall will reflect the university’s ‘unique and continued contribution to the area’.

The sculpture will be developed and sourced locally by local artist, Sara Cunningham-Bell.

The statue will represent a student in a graduation gown holding a quadrant representing blue sky thinking outside of the box to progress research, innovation and inventiveness.

Gathered around the figure’s feet will be objects reflecting academia, research, music and sporting achievement. The base text will reveal a quotation from the opening in 1968 and from the first graduation in 1970.

The university has said that the sculpture will Celebrate Local Business and a Landmark For Tourism & Local Community at the entrance to Coleraine.
