Helicopter Forced To Land After Striking Power Cables

A private helicopter struck three power lines earlier this afternoon close to the Magherabuoy Road in Portrush. Hundreds of homes are still currently without power.

Power was restored to more 1000 homes by noon.

A police spokesperson said ‘Drivers are advised the Maclevennon Road, between Coleraine and Portrush, is closed between the Ballywillan Presbyterian Church and the Magherabuoy Road to allow NIE engineers carry out work on the power lines. Please seek an alternative route, if possible.

Racing was a delayed for a further 30 minutes due to this non-racing related incident.

A spokesperson for the Air Accident Investigation Branch said ‘ We are aware of the incident and are investigating. ‘

There are no reports of injuries at this time.

NIE also attended an incident involving a powerline which went on fire in the Heatherlea Ave / Station Road area of Portstewart. It is understood this was caused by a surge in the earlier incident.  50 homes are currently without power.
