Council Coast & Glens Council met last night and agreed to bestow the Freedom of the Borough on Royal Portrush Golf Club in recognition of the amazing contribution it made to the 148th Open.

In a statement Councillor Richard Holmes said ‘There have been so many people involved with bringing the Open to the Borough and ensuring it ran smoothly that it seemed inappropriate to pick out any individuals. The Major winners, Harrington, McIlroy, Clarke and McDowell all played a massive part in bringing the Open as did politicians, public servants and the Club themselves.

Royal Portrush Gold Club and all those involved in the Open did our area proud and the Freedom of the Borough recognises their tremendous contribution.’

Councillor Aarron Callan said ‘Very pleased that my motion to award the Freedom of the Borough to Royal Portrush Golf Club was agreed by all parties last night.

After very positive discussion and engagement over the last few days I changed my motion to Royal Portrush Golf Club as it not only recognises the Golfers but also all the volunteers and members who were involved in making the 148th Open such a successful event.

I also like to mention Wilma Erskine who has made Royal Portrush into the great institution it is today and has helped to put our area firmly on the world stage. I look forward to the ceremony of awarding the club the highest order that the Council can give.’
