A motorist who claimed spilling hot coffee onto his lap caused him to crash into another vehicle has been fined £500 and given six penalty points.
Kristopher Darren Scott was involved in a collision at Ballybogey Road near Ballymoney last September, Coleraine Magistrates Court was told.
The 36-year-old of Frosses Road near Dunloy pleaded guilty to careless driving and having no insurance.
The court heard how the PSNI had been called after Scott veered into another vehicle.
The other driver attempted to swerve and pulled onto the hard shoulder but there was still an impact.
Both Scott and the other driver were injured.
Scott claimed he had lost control and crashed after hot coffee had gone onto his lap.
He said he had believed he had insurance cover to drive.
