Hotel worker threw full can of beer at police and adopted a ‘fighting stance’

A hotel worker who threw a full can of beer at police and adopted a fighting stance before telling an officer: “Oi, what the f**k are you going to do?” has been given a five months jail term.

Brian Dickinson (23), of Enfield Street in Portstewart, committed offences at Rosemary Place in Coleraine.

He previously pleaded guilty to charges of being disorderly and assaulting a police officer.

A prosecutor told Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday that at 8.45pm on April 11 this year police attended an address in Coleraine to make an arrest and the defendant, who was present, became agitated and verbally abusive as his friend was being arrested.

Outside, Dickinson threw a can of beer at police and adopted a fighting stance. CS spray was used by police.

Defence solicitor John Murphy said the defendant, who had a record, was “one of those people who should just not drink alcohol”.

The court heard the defendant was employed at the Me & Mrs Jones Hotel in Portstewart and was a “hard worker”.

Mr Murphy added: “When he is sober he is one of the nicest people you could meet” but on the date in question he had been drinking all day and then “completely stupidly” got involved with police.

District Judge Liam McNally said the defendant had previously been given a suspended sentence and after an incident last November he had not jailed the defendant.

But here he was back in court seven months later, the judge said.

The judge said if he was to suspend the sentence again his words would have “no meaning”.

The defendant was given a five months jail term but released on £300 bail pending appeal.
