A full-scale emergency was declared at Cushendall on Saturday evening after a swimmer got into difficulty on the beach.
Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue, Red Bay Lifeboat, NIAS crews, HM Coastguard Rescue Helicopter form Prestwick and Coastguards from Ballycastle and Larne attended the scene.
The casualty was transferred from the scene by NIAS road Ambulance Antrim Area Hospital
Elaine O’Boyle from the Glens cycling club said;
“Yesterday we lost a valued club member, Gentleman, legend and friend.
“Hugh Barry loved Glens CC and his love of cycling was infectious and inspirational to all that knew him.
All members of Glens CC are in shock and are absolutely devastated and for Eillis, his wife and esteemed club member”.
Causeway Coast and Glens Councillor Margaret Ann McKillop Said “People in Cushendall are shocked and deeply saddened after a man tragically lost his life after getting into difficulty while swimming.
‘This is terrible news. My thoughts and prayers are with his family at this incredibly difficult time.”
