Hume “a giant in our history” – Sugden

1 Mins read

EAST Londonderry MLA Claire Sugden has described the late John Hume as “a giant in our history” and offered her heartfelt condolences to all who knew him.

The former SDLP leader, who won the Nobel Peace Prize jointly with David Trimble in 1998, died on Monday (August 3) after a long illness.

“I offer my sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in the SDLP,” she said.

“John is a giant in our history. His contribution to Northern Ireland is immeasurable.

“When others turned to violence, John sought politics and peace. He had vision to see what others couldn’t and Northern Ireland is a better place because of it.

“Rest in peace, John.”
