Islay lifeboat Tow Portrush Crew To Safety

1 Mins read

The Islay lifeboat Helmut Schroder II of Dunlossit with relief coxswain Mark Criddle and a crew of four, were paged by Belfast Coastguard at 4.31pm on Wednesday 29 March to go to the aid of an Atlantic rowing boat.

The crew of five rowers raising money for the RNLI had been overcome with fatigue and sea sickness and had problems with their small electric engine while rowing from Portrush in Northern Ireland to Bowmore on Islay.

The lifeboat took them in tow from the south west of the Mull of Oa and towed them to the safety of Port Ellen.

Mark Criddle, who is from Torbay, said that the crew and lifeboat performed very well in favourable conditions.
