Cllr Richard Holmes has expressed concern at reports of an incident at a band parade in Kilrea on Friday night in which SDLP MLA John Dallat claimed he was “surrounded by what might be described as a mob”.
“I am aware that other people who were present – including a Parade Marshall – have given very different accounts. A lengthy statement from one of the Marshalls on the Ulster Bands Forum’s Facebook page outlines the concern they had over Mr Dallat’s presence at the parade and that a number of discussions took place with the police on duty. I would urge anyone concerned about this incident to read the statement in full.
“Given that we are entering the parading season two things are clear to me:
“Firstly it is incumbent on everyone to do everything they can to behave responsibly, show respect to others and not do or say anything which could inflame tensions – particularly so politicians who should exemplify leadership and respect at all times.
“Secondly, the South Londonderry Twelfth of July parade will be held in Kilrea in three weeks’ time. This is traditionally a great day out and a very family friendly event, and I would not want to see anything said or done which would create tensions in advance of it.”
