Local Man Nataniel Hunter Hailed as Hero

Local man Nataniel Hunter from Ballyvoy has been hailed a hero following 3 children getting into difficulty this evening at Ballycastle Beach.

The dramatic moment saw three young children being saved from drowning at Ballycastle beach after they were swept out to sea.

A Dramatic rescue operation swung into operation with the scramble of Ballycastle Coastguard, Portrush RNLI, Rescue Helicopter 199 from Prestwick, and the NIAS.

Whilst the emergency services were being tasked to the scene, Nataniel Hunter and one unknown male rushed out to sea to save the children.

Speaking to Causeway Coast Community this evening Nataniel’s wife Amy said “The three children were playing in the water in rubber rings unaccompanied by adults.

It then became apparent that they were getting into difficulty as the current was pulling them further and further out from the shore.

A big crowd of people gathered and were shouting to the children in the water and the coastguard were called.

After some time we could see the children were getting very distressed and were screaming for help, getting dragged increasingly further out, so Nataniel and a local teenager grabbed the life rings from the beach and swam in and brought the children to shore. At that point the coast guard and ambulance arrived to treat the children and take them home.”

The children have been assessed on scene and have been taken to Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

Rescue Helicopter 199 was only minutes away from Ballycastle when its service were no longer required, it was returned to its base in Scotland.
