At the weekend of 9th and 10th September a team of eight local people took part in the Chest Heart and Stroke ” Five Peaks Challenge “.
This was a gruelling 36 hour challenge which was to climb Slieve Donard Mournes, Slieve Gullion Newry, Cuilcagh Enniskillen, Trostan Antrim Hills, Sawel Sperrins.
A spokesperson said “This was our first year to compete in this challenge and we raised over £ 1500:00 by entering for the event and came 3rd out of 10 teams who entered.
In the planning of the challenge getting the logistics correct and effective planning of the route was vital as two of the Peaks were ” blacked out ” for night climbs. Our two drivers Vonla Smyth and Heather McCandless were key to our success in their driving, getting us to our destinations safely, as quickly as possible, enabling us to get a few hours rest and ensuring we got fed. Without them we could not have achieved our time of 26 hours.
How are we affected by CHS in N.I. Approximately 39% of all adult deaths are caused by CHS conditions which equates to 16 deaths per day.
Thank you to all who sponsored and supported us, we are indebted to you.”
