Locals Attend Secretary Of State Annual Garden Party

The Secretary of State, Karen Bradley, held her annual Garden Party today (Tuesday 4th September) at Hillsborough Castle.

This years VIP guest was HRH Princess Anne who was greeted by the large crowds and invited guests for a glimpse of the Royal. In previous years the VIP guests had been Prince William & Wife Kate, Duke & Duchess of Cambridge in 2016 and last year Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex.

The region’s secretary of state has hosted the event annually since 1984.

Hundreds of guests were invited from a wide cross section of the community, including voluntary and sporting groups, charitable organisations as well as local people who play an integral part in their communities.

Along those guests was local man Robert Downes and partner Sarah Thompson. Coleraine man Robert Downes is well known for his love of cycling and who established a tandem cycling group for blind and partially sighted people living in the area.

Speaking about being invited to attend this years Garden Party, Robert said ; “I am delighted to have been asked to attend this event. Someone took the time out to nominate me and I would like this to this opportunity to say a massive thank-you. Sarah and I are having a great time.”
