A MAN accused of assaulting three doctors and a ward sister as well as being disorderly at the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine have have been having a “psychotic episode,” a defence barrister claims.
Patrick McGothigan (32), of Fogarty Crescent, Ballycastle, is charged in relation to November 24 last year.
Also on that date he is accused of assaulting four police officers and causing criminal damage to a PSNI flak jacket.
A defence barrister told Coleraine Magistrates Court, sitting in Ballymena on November 2, the issue in the case was “whether or not Mr McGothigan was in the middle of a psychotic episode whenever this happened”.
He said the defendant had been “detained under the Mental Health Order the following day”.
Meanwhile, the defendant is also charged with committing offences on September 8 this year including making a threat to a man that he would destroy his “home by fire”.
He is also charged with assaulting the man and assaulting two females and causing £200 worth of damage to bar stock at the Anzac Bar in Ballycastle.
The defendant is further accused of damaging the front door of the bar and stealing steaks from Eurospar in Ballycastle.
The cases have been adjourned to the end of November.
