Man accused of attempted murder following ‘steak knife’ stabbing in Coleraine is refused bail

A man charged with attempted murder after a stabbing incident involving a ‘steak knife’ in Coleraine has been refused bail.

A man aged in his 40s required keyhole surgery after being stabbed during an incident at Blackthorn Court around 11.30pm on July 3 this year.

Arising out of the incident, Gary Moore, who appeared in court on his 31st birthday via video link from Maghaberry Prison where he has been on remand, faces charges of attempted murder; possession of an offensive weapon – a knife; assaulting a woman and damaging a window and kitchen light.

Moore had an address listed as Greenmount Avenue in Coleraine.

A police officer opposed a bail application.

The court heard Moore made off from the scene and was arrested the next day.

One version of events put to police, the court heard, was that Moore had been asleep in the living room and when he woke up he was “angry” that another male was there and a kitchen window was broken during an “outburst”.

It was then claimed that individuals then arrived at the house because of concerns for the safety of Moore’s girlfriend.

The court was told Moore told police he had a knife in his hand because he had been eating and he was in fear when he saw people arrive at the address.

The police officer said he had 20 previous offences and believed there was a risk of re-offending if he was released on bail.

Defence solicitor Garrett Greene said the defendant suffered “significant facial injuries” during the incidents.

Refusing bail, District Judge Peter King said the case involved a stabbing allegation after an incident commenced in a domestic setting and said the defendant was advancing a self-defence case having believed that those who arrived at the scene posed a risk to him.

Bail was refused and the defendant was further remanded in custody to September 9.
