1 Mins read

A 42-year-old man accused of carrying out a series of break-ins at Our Lady of Bethlehem Abbey monastery in Portglenone was remanded in custody on Friday.

Gareth Steven Patrick Hyndman, whose address was given as Coleraine Street in Kilrea, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court.

He is charged with three burglaries at the monastery this year.

On January 25 he is accused of stealing £600 in cash; on January 30 he allegedly stole £5 in cash and a key and on February 15 is charged with burglary of the monastery with intent to steal.

The defendant is also accused of the attempted burglary of the monastery with intent to steal on March 24.

A PSNI detective constable said she believed she could connect the defendant to the charges.

A defence solicitor said no bail application was being made.

The defence lawyer said he had no questions regarding his client being connected to the charges.

The solicitor said he was “presently reviewing addresses” for a bail application and asked for a “short adjournment”.

The lawyer said Hyndman had family members living in the Portglenone area.

The detective constable told District Judge Peter King that police would be objecting to Hyndman being released on bail.

No further details were given to the court.

Hyndman was remanded in custody to appear via video link at Ballymena Magistrates Court on April 4.
