A man from the Lislagan area near Ballymoney who attempted to bite a policeman’s leg has been given a three months jail term, suspended for two years.
Christopher Ellis (28), of Torrens Park, assaulted a police officer after being disorderly in Portstewart in September last year.
The defendant was agitated and verbally abusive to police and when arrested he said he would “smash” a police officer’s face if it wasn’t for handcuffs.
In a police vehicle, Ellis attempted to lunge towards the driver and then attempted to bite a police officer on the leg.
At Coleraine Magistrates Court on February 4 a defence barrister said comments allegedly made by the officer which were captured on bodyworn footage showed there was a “bit of context”.
Deputy District Judge Peter Magill accepted there was a ‘context’ but told Ellis: “Nevertheless such behaviour is unacceptable”.
