A man who was in possession of herbal cannabis and five ‘Thunder Rocket’ fireworks was told by a judge it was a “dangerous combination”.
Daniel Greene (22), of Nursery Avenue, Ballymoney, was detected with the herbal cannabis inside a small green plastic bottle. A prosecutor told Coleraine Magistrates Court, on Friday, police approached the defendant’s vehicle at 1.15am on November 14 last year at a lay-by on the Bann Road, Aghadowey, and could smell cannabis.
Five ‘Thunder Rockets’ were found in the boot of the vehicle. District Judge Liam McNally said: “A dangerous combination – Thunder Rockets and cannabis”.
Defence solicitor Sam Barr said his client pleaded guilty to having the drugs and possessing the fireworks without a licence. The lawyer said the defendant had previously given friends a lift several days previously and later when he opened the boot he found the fireworks and had been keeping them there until he next saw his friends to give them back.
Mr Barr said the defendant came from a “very law-abiding family” and the offending had “caused considerable consternation”. The lawyer said Greene was not someone who regularly uses cannabis and has now stopped. “He is, ordinarily, a very responsible young man,” added Mr Barr. Judge McNally said they were “serious enough offences” as he fined Greene £400 and ordered the destruction of the drugs and fireworks.
