A man has been charged with attempting to bribe to a member of staff at the Driver & Vehicle Agency by allegedly offering £1,000 to get a Republic of Ireland driving licence exchanged for a Northern Ireland licence.

Brendan McNally (52), of Kilrea Road in Upperlands, County Derry/Londonderry, is alleged to have committed the offence on August 13 this year.

He appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday.

The charge sheet reads: “Defendant on the 13/08/2018 in contravention of section 1(2) of the Bribery Act 2010, bribed another person, a DVA member of staff, by offering a financial or other advantage, namely £1,000 to that person intending the advantage a relevant function or activity, namely to exchange a Southern licence to a Northern licence’.

The defendant is also accused of ‘possessing an article in connection with fraud’ by having a “fake Southern driving licence” on August 15 this year.

He is also accused of ”fraud by false representation’.

The charge sheet in that matter says: ‘The defendant, on the 15/08/2018, dishonestly made a false representation, namely filled in an official DVA form knowing it was to aid a fraud, ie exchanging a fake Southern licence for a Northern one with the intention, by making the representation, to make a gain for yourself or another’.

A police officer said he believed he could connect the defendant to the charges.

The defendant, who was represented by defence solicitor Denise Gillan, had the case adjourned for six weeks until early December.
