Man had knife at train station on April Fool’s Day

1 Mins read

A man who had a knife in the area of Coleraine Train Station on April Fool’s Day last year has been jailed for four months.

John Monroe (36), of Lever Park in Portstewart, appeared at Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link from prison on February 7 and admitted possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

A prosecutor said that following an incident with another male staff stopped Monroe going into a reception room and then they noticed a knife on a bicycle.

When Monroe left the immediate area staff removed the knife – a silver butter knife sharpened at one end – and called police.

At the time the defendant said the knife may have been on the bike which he had borrowed from a friend.

Meanwhile, Monroe also admitted stealing cigarette tips and shower gel worth £3 from Poundland in Ballymena in October last year.

He had originally told police he was going to pay for the items but he got distracted by a phone call from a family member.
