Man more than twice the drink drive limit whilst behind wheel of vehicle in dangerous condition caused a collision

1 Mins read

A MAN was more than twice the drink limit when he drove into the path of an oncoming vehicle and caused a collision in which he was hurt.

Stephen Martin (58), of Ballyveely Road near Loughgiel, appeared at Coleraine Magistrates Court on Monday and admitted driving without due care and attention in a vehicle which was in a dangerous condition.

He also pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol in his blood at Lough Road and Corkey Road; using a Nissan Almera without insurance and an MOT offence.

The charges relate to May 23 this year.

A prosecutor said there had been a two vehicle road collision at Lough Road and the defendant had an alcohol/blood reading of 186 with the legal limit being 80.

The driver of the other vehicle said he was going down Lough Road when an oncoming vehicle entered his path and he was unable to take evasive action.

District Judge Peter King said there were “some very stark and striking aspects” to the case, not least the “significant” amount of alcohol in the defendant’s system.

The case was adjourned to December 9 for a pre-sentence report to be prepared.
