A man says he isn’t a cannabis user and didn’t know how he came to be in possession of the drug after attending an 18th birthday party.
Simon McAfee (23), of Farranseer Park, Macosquin, was detected with the cannabis on January 31 last year.
At Coleraine Magistrate’s Court on January 28 this year he pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis. A prosecutor said police attended an address due to a concern about the defendant and police found cannabis in his jeans.
He was taken to hospital and kept in for treatment. During a police interview, the defendant said he was sorry for his behaviour.
Defence solicitor Sam Barr said the defendant was not a drug user and did not go out often but on the date in question had consumed a large amount of alcohol.
The lawyer said his client could offer no explanation as to how he had cannabis but believed it may have come into his possession when he was drunk at the party.
McAfee was fined £250.
